PETS AND PEOPLE
WISH LIST
By DIDI CLEMENT
Special to the News-Post
The Frederick County Animal
Control Center is the only shelter in the county for animals whether they are
homeless, unwanted or in some kind of trouble. There are several private rescues
operating in the county but those private charities can only take a few select
animals at a time and they do not have a facility at which animals can be taken
during an emergency. Frederick County Animal Shelter, just like private rescues,
relies on generous support from volunteers and donors, which just about everyone
knows.
What you
may not know is that the Frederick County Animal Shelter can use things you’ve
been storing and wondering if someone might
need some day. These items include: canned dog food or canned cat food, small
blankets and sheets or those that can be cut without unraveling (fleece,
flannel), aquariums and safe animal cages, carriers and fencing, pet toys,
garden hoses and nozzles, welding gloves. Tools and garden supplies alsosuch as
push brooms and rakes and extra screwdrivers are needed.
They can use things that you may have left over
after a big party, such as, paper towels, paper bowls, plastic utensils and
trash bags. Or special things you use at work
might be of use — rubber gloves, gauze, straw or hay and mulch. If you don’t
have any of these things, you could post this list on your community bulletin
board, at your yoga class or send it to your e-mail list. If your local pet
store or grocery will let you post it there, that would help, too. Make copies
for your Scout troop and Little League parents, too. My sister posts the list on
her teacher’s web board and if you belong to an electronic mailing list (list
serv) and you are allowed to post community needs, that’s helpful. Marketing
services charge thousands of dollars for access to mailing lists so getting the
word out is a big barrier to finding things that the shelter needs that are just
sitting around waiting for someone
